Islamic Sects

What is a sect? The dictionary definition of a sect includes the following:

l A body of followers

l A School of opinion

l A subdivision of a religion

l A dissenting body of people

The most well-known Muslim sects are probably the Shi'as and the Sunni's. Another Muslim sect is the Sufists who practise a mystical form of Islam - but there are many other sects, most of them quite small.

Elements of the beliefs and practices of some Islamic sects, especially the Sufists, are to be found in many Western 'new age' cults, often mixed with elements of other mystic religions. These, however, are not Islamic.
