The Synagogue

The Synagogue is the Jewish place of worship. It will normally consist of two basic parts:

The Sanctuary where prayer services are held and which contains the Ark with the scrolls of the Torah inside. This part is always present.

Other halls, rooms and offices which are used for a variety of functions including: prayer when there are only a small number of people present; offices for synagogue officials; classrooms for teaching children Hebrew and other aspects of Judaism; a Mikvah (ritual bath); kitchens and halls used for holding celebrations and parties - e.g. after a wedding or barmitzvah; a Genizah for storing worn out holy books and scrolls. Most synagogues will have only some of these.
